Architectural Delineation Competition – KRob 2013 Winners

If you’re “in the know”, you’ll understand when I say these are not amazing drawings … these are amazing “delineations.”

Last Thursday, I was asked to moderate a panel of extremely talented illustrators – delineators – graphic artists …. whatever name they like to go by, as they announced the winners of the 39th annual AIA Dallas Chapter Ken Roberts Memorial Delineation Competition or “KRob” as it is commonly referenced. This year’s competition saw a record number of entries (408) and in all, over 29 countries were represented – including Japan, France, Australia, UK, South Korea, Russia, Brazil and many more (21 more to be specific.)

The panel I was fortunate to moderate was streamed live across the web and was recorded … I will modify this sentence once the audio has been cleaned up and post a link so that anyone who is interested can listen to my smokey and dulcet tones.

For now, let’s just get to it – here are the winners, the juror’s selections and a handful of the finalists from this years event. I recommend that you head over to the official Ken Roberts Competition web site and take a look at all the recognized entries (finalists and winners) from this year and the last 8 years! It’s a huge repository of architectural eye-candy.

I could look at drawings like these all day long – and I bet you could as well. I am amazed and humbled by the skill presented in these images. I shared with this year’s KRob committee members and the jurors a story that the first year I chaired this event in the mid-90’s was the first year that we allowed digital entries to be submitted. This caused quite an uproar which included some of the longtime sponsors questioning their participation. I look at the artistry in each of these images and marvel at the views that are selected, the colors that are used, the framing of the image on the page …

I hope you can appreciate the time, effort, skill, and dedication to their craft that each of these illustrators has demonstrated. Makes me want to get out my sketch book and try and start working on my own delineation skills.
